joker movie october 2019

Pick of the month – Joker (2019)

Joker is directed by Todd Phillips and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert DeNiro, and Zazie Beetz. The film is a gritty character study of Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society.

Todd Phillips drew inspiration for the film from Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke”. The one shot iconic Batman story from writer Alan Moore, artists Brian Bolland and John Higgins. The storyline features, not only the origin of the Joker. But a portion of the story, tells of the Joker escaping from Arkham and shooting and paralyzing Barbara Gordon, Batgirl. Barbara survives the attack and later becomes the hero known as Oracle. Additionally, the Martin Scorsese films Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The King of Comedy. Several other films also influenced the screenplay such as Serpico, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and The Man Who Laughs. Phillips wrote in a certain amount of the Joker lore into the character.

In the weeks leading up to Jokers release, the film has already received major Oscar buzz after winning the Golden Lion Top Prize at the 76th annual Venice Film Festival, on Aug. 31st. Some previous Golden Lion winners include films such as Roma and The Shape of Water.
The film has been criticized for its violent content and its focus on a lonely, isolated man who turns into a murderous criminal. After growing tired of constantly being beaten down by an indifferent world. The concern being that this films message will inspire others to commit similar acts.
Film and other types of art are meant to inspire us to think and to question the society and the world we live in. We can take the stance that someone like the Joker deserves no sympathy for committing such heinous crimes. However, this will be an interesting look into one of the Dark Knight’s most notorious rogues.
Joker hits theaters October 4th.

Jonah Hill is in talks to join DC’s Superhero film The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves. Though it’s unclear who the actor could portray, there has been speculation he’s being considered to play a villain in the film.
