Whis is one of the strongest beings in all of Dragon Ball Super‘s multi-verse. This is a fact that no follower of the franchise can deny. We’ve seen him do some incredible things, yet, we really do not know much about Universe 7‘s Angel. With the English dub ended, we are left questioning his origin, his abilities, and the overall purpose of Whis and his angelic siblings.
Until Akira Toriyama and the creative team give us more answers, all we can do is reflect on what we do know and imagine the possibilities. Below we will go over everything that has been revealed about Whis up until now.
Reader beware, this article will contain some spoilers for Dragon Ball Super.
Whis is a member of an angelic race, who act as attendants to the gods of their respective realms. We do not know how angels reproduce, but it is known that the Omni-king Zeno‘s Grand Priest is the father of Whis and all of the other angels assigned to Gods of Destruction.
Over a thousand years ago, Whis was trained by his elder sister Vados. Though she maintains that she is still stronger than Whis, he makes note that things may have changed after all of this time.
After an unknown period of time, Whis was assigned to Beerus as both his trainer and attendant.
It is also unknown if he has always had a soft spot for good food, or if it was something that came to him later in life.
Throughout the series, Whis has displayed various skills which all contribute to him being an immensely strong entity. We can only assume he has even more up his sleeve. For now though, lets go through his confirmed abilities.
This sounds like a given because, well, even Yamcha flies. However, as you’ll see in the next ability, Whis makes the best use of it by far.
Whis has the ability to quickly transport himself (as well as others who are touching his back) vast distances through the vacuum of space without the need of life support machinery for breathing.
Whis is able to create protective fields around himself and others. This ability comes in to play during space travel and came in handy when saving a small group of our heroes from the initial destruction of Earth caused by Frieza in the Golden Frieza Saga.
He can turn back time up to 3 minutes, allowing him to alter or influence events. Whis used this ability to undo Earth’s destruction at the hands of Frieza and during the Future Trunks Saga.
Clairvoyance and Projection
Whis can not only see events that have happened or are currently happening anywhere in the multi-verse, he can project them for others to see.
Whis is able to transport himself and others to different universes and dimensions. This is seen many times during the Future Trunks Saga.
In order to convince Vegeta to join Universe 7‘s team in the Tournament of Power, Whis uses a strange ability to safely remove baby Bulla from a pregnant Bulma‘s belly.
Even upon hearing it for the first time, Whis is fluent in any language regardless of how primitive or advanced.
Whis is able to transport himself and others into a pocket dimension, which is a realm outside of our own spacetime. This “Whis dimension” is dense with divine energy. So much so that it has a crushing effect on anybody who is not strong enough to withstand it. Time also flows differently in this realm, making it a perfect place for Goku and Vegeta to train just prior to taking on Frieza.
Matter Creation and Manipulation
Whis can alter matter in various ways. From both creating and destroying a track for Goku and Vegeta to train on to making the window of Bulma‘s vehicle disappear then reappear so he could retrieve a dessert.
It is believed that Whis is a full time user of Ultra Instinct, an ability that gods including Beerus have difficulty achieving. This allows every part of his body to react instantly and independently to anything around him faster than the mind can send electrical signals.
Whis is incredibly strong. He effortlessly spars with Goku and Vegeta, blocking their shots with a single finger while seemingly dozing off.
He is even seen to knock out Lord Beerus with a single blow to the back of his neck.
Whis has the ability to bring mortals back to life. This is seen at the end of the Tournament of Power when he brings Frieza back to life, removing his halo as a gift from Beerus for doing a good job.
There are also two abilities which Vados, the elder sister of Whis and angel of Universe 6 possesses which we can assume Whis also possesses.
We see Vados accompanied by Champa alter the atmosphere of an unnamed planet to one that was breathable.
We see Vados using this ability to move six of the Super Dragon Balls, which each are the size of planets.
With the use of these abilities, Whis is easily the strongest being in all of Universe 7. The only entities stronger than him are his father the Grand Priest, the Omni-Kings Grand Zenos and perhaps his older sister Vados.
It should also be noted that Whis and all of his siblings were not affected by the eradication of their respective universes as they were erased during the Tournament of Power. This leads us to believe that they serve a greater purpose in the grand scheme of the multi-verse.
This is all we know about Whis for the time being. He is certainly a very powerful and interesting character, and we cannot wait to see what happens with him and the rest of our favorites in the future.
