Sandman is the next series coming to Netflix based upon the DC Vertigo comic book series. The epic series from writer Neil Gaiman is getting a live adaptation for the popular streaming service. Here we discuss the comic book series, the upcoming streaming series, and a glimpse at the new casting choices.

Sandman | DC Vertigo Comics

The comic series is a blend of horror, mythology, and history within the DC Universe. The Sandman is a story about stories and how Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, is captured and subsequently learns that sometimes to change is inevitable.

The comic series ran for 75 issues from January 1989 till the last published issue in March 1996. Originally, the first 46 issues of the comic series were published under the DC comics name. Then beginning with issue #47 the publication begun being published under the Vertigo name. Until its retirement in 2020, when it was then published and renamed under the DC Black Label.

The stories’ iconic blending of dark fantasy horror with several well-known characters within the DC universe is what drew fans and critics to the comic series. Some of the DC characters blended into the story are John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Lucifer, Martian Manhunter, Scarecrow, just to name a few.

 

 

 

 

Netflix Sandman & the new Cast

Netflix and Warner Bros TV agreed to a deal to adapt a live-action series, Sandman. Back in 2019, the premier streaming service had begun talks with Gaiman and Warner Bros TV about the series. Joining Gaiman in producing the series is a veteran producer and screenwriter, David Goyer (The Dark Knight, Man of Steel). 

The series centers around the main character Dream. In 1916, Dream (the King of stories) is captured in an occult ritual. While being held captive for 105 years. He escapes and sets out to restore order in his kingdom in 2021.

 

Tom Sturridge has been cast as Dream for the upcoming Netflix series. Dream or his alternative name Morpheus. Is known as one of the seven Endless. The other Endless are Destiny, Death, Despair, Desire, Delirium (or Delight), and Destruction (or the Prodigal). These metaphysical entities influence the stories’ main character. 

 

 

 

Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, Star Wars The Last Jedi) will portray Lucifer Morningstar. Lucifer is also known as the ruler of Hell.

 

 

 

 

 

Boyd Holbrook is a Corinthian. Making his appearance in the second story arc titled, The Doll House. He is a nightmare created by Dream. 

 

 

Vivienne Acheampong will portray a female version of Lucien, Lucienne. Lucien is the head librarian of the Dreaming and trusted friend of Dream. The Dreaming houses all books that have ever written and books that are still to be written. Lucien was originally Dream’s raven companion that Dream turned into a human form.

 

Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) is Roderick Burgess, Also known as Lord Magus. A magician of the Order of Ancient mysteries. He is the reason for Dream’s entrapment.

 

 

British comedians Sanjeev Bhaskar (Top) and Asim Chaudhry (Bottom) will play Cain and Abel (left).
