Black Panther

This is a tremendous accomplishment not only for Black Panther but for the superhero genre. This is the first comic book movie to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. The Dark Knight (2008) and Dick Tracy (1990) were previously nominated for the Academy Awards, but never in the category of Best Picture.

On Sunday January 27th, 2019, Black Panther won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

This is a historic moment for this film and other films like it. It’s the highest grossing and only superhero film to win this award in the history of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). This win signifies a shift in perspective, when it comes to films from the superhero genre. It also brings Black Panther that much closer to potentially winning the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards.

The Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was established May 11th ,1927.  The Academy is a professional organization that participates in the advancement of arts and sciences in motion pictures. The Academy Awards ceremony focuses on the merits of those within the organization. Inducted winners within the Academy are given the opportunity to vote for their peers under several different categories. That range from acting, to directing, to visual effects and even to Best Picture of the Year.

Other organizations, such as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Golden Globes) also give recognition to the advancements of motion pictures and have similar voting systems. They too are restricted to union members and press within the media or film industry.

On January 22nd, the 91st annual Academy Awards nominations were announced.

Black Panther Review

From director Ryan Coolger (Fruitville Station, Creed) Black Panther is the sensational chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the death of his father in Captain America Civil War (2016). T’Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a new powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T’Challa must summon the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people.

After seeing this movie in the theater and return to it once again at home. I continue to find myself lost in my enjoyment for every moment we (the audience) get spend in Wakanda. From the streets of Wakanda, to the fields, and even the vibranium mine. This film, does not simply bring the elements to life, but rather it breathes life into every scene. The colors, the sounds, all bring the audience into T’Challa’s story. Along with the dynamic and compelling acting, and the classically written narrative structure. Which allows for the viewer to exclude the off balanced visual effects in the third act of the film. The progressive nature of the dialogue add an additional level to the film as does it add an additional dynamic character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So for us the film was immediately an instant classic. So Black Panther, gets 4/5 buckets of popcorn!
