Catwoman has always been one of Batman’s most cunning and dangerous rouges. The masterful feline thief and gymnast is about to celebrate her 80th anniversary. This super spectacular 100 page one shot comic is set to be released today. So let’s explore her modern origin within the DC Comic book universe.
Catwoman’s First Appearance
Since her introduction in the DC Comic book universe. Catwoman has always been a cunning thief. A masterful gymnast and a deadly foe to the world’s greatest detective, Batman.
Catwoman made her first appearance in Batman #1, spring 1940. From writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane.
Finger and Kane wanted to give a character the female readers could connect with. While also adding a love interest element for Batman.
Selina Kyle, Catwoman or The Cat is an expert thief, a skilled hand to hand combatant and gymnast. She also works with a variety of close quarter weapons. Such as her bull whip, bolas and metal claws. Making Catwoman a cunning and deadly adversary.
During the 1970’s, Catwoman’s story would become more entangled with her love interest, Batman.
In an Earth two storyline, Selina and Bruce Wayne eventually get married. The two have a daughter together, Helena Wayne. Better known as The Huntress.
In 1987, author Frank Miller and artist David Muzzucchelli took the characters origin and added a dark twist in the infamous Batman: Year One storyline. Miller had written Selina as a dominatrix prostitute, protecting a child from her pimp.
In 1989, Catwoman had her first mini series from writer Mindy Newell and artist JJ Birch. Newell continued the character’s origin laid out in Miller and Muzzucchelli’s Batman: Year one storyline.
The series begins, at the start of Catwoman’s criminal career. The characters new dark origin had adult fans wanting more of the deadly feline criminal.
In 1993, Catwoman was given her first on going series. From writer Jo Duffy, artists Jim Blanet and Dick Giordano.The on-going series had focused the character as an international thief, and bounty hunter with a moral code.
The series changed hands from several writers and artists. Eventually, the series reached 94 issues before it was cancelled.
In 2002, the series was relaunched with writer Ed Brubaker and artist Darwin Cooke. It took a while for fans to adjust to the new on-going series. However, the series took an ambiguous turn by issue #44. When the creative team of Will Pfiefer, and artists Pete Wood & Adam Hughes joined in on the series. The creative team brought new life into the Catwoman series. Adding more layered storylines and a new series of iconic covers.
Catwoman is introduced, after the Rebirth of the DC Universe in Batman (3rd series) issue #9.
Selina is imprisoned in Arkham Asylum. However, she is released during the ‘I am suicide’ five part storyline. In an attempt to help Batman find and capture the Psycho-Pirate, on the island of Santa Prisca.
In May of 2018, comic book writer Joelle Jones was hired to take on the writing for the revamped series. It was released on July 4th, 2018. Jones wrote the first twenty one issues and drew the first six issues along with artist Laura Allred.
Most fans of Selina Kyle/ Catwoman, are more familiar with her movie or television portrayals. She has been played by several famous actresses over the years. Such as Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwheter, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfieiffer, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, and Zoe Kravitz in the upcoming movie, The Batman (2021).
80th Anniversary 100 page Super Spectacular Covers
